What is Ramon Magsaysay Award ?
The Ramon Magsaysay Award was established in the year 1957 by the trustees of the “Rockefeller Brothers Fund” with the consent of the Government of the Philippines. This award was named after the former President of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay. Ramon Magsaysay had made a special contribution in courageous service to the general public, practical idealism in a democratic society and in building a clean government character. Therefore, the Government of Philippines had approved the Ramon Magsaysay Award to keep his memories fresh. This award is given every year on Magsaysay’s birth anniversary on 31st August.

The first Indian to be honored with the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Vinoba Bhave (1958), followed by notables like Mother Teresa (1962), Jayaprakash Narayan (1965), Satyajit Ray (1967), Chandi Prasad Bhatt (1982), Arun Shourie ( 1982), Kiran Bedi (1994), Arvind Kejriwal (2006), P Sainath (2007). In the year 2019, this award was given to journalist Ravish Kumar.
