Need for Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019

What is Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019?

Amendment in Citizenship Amendment Bill 1955

  • According to the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, upon acquiring Indian citizenship, illegal immigrants will be deemed to be citizens of India from the date of entry (before December 31, 2014) and all legal proceedings against them in respect of their illegal migration will cease. However, the provisions on citizenship will not apply to illegal immigrants in the tribal areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, or Tripura.
  • This bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the year 2016, but the opposition parties demanded to send this bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, after which the Joint Parliamentary Committee made some changes in this bill and handed it over to the Government of India. The Union Cabinet has given its approval to this new bill.
  • According to the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019, people of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian religions from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be given freedom to live and work anywhere in India.
