What is an amicus curiae ?

In order to provide quick decision to cases older than 10 years, the Government of India has created a scheme to provide decision through a retired judicial officer or executive officer, the person giving decision in the scheme is called Nyaya Mitra.


Nyaya Mitra Scheme

This scheme has been launched by the Law Ministry of the Government of India. An attempt has been made to reduce the burden of the judiciary through this scheme, Nyaya Mitra Scheme has been started in 227 districts of the country, under this scheme 10 years old pending cases will be heard. Highlights of Nyaya Mitra Scheme

  • This scheme was launched by Union Law and Justice Minister Shri Ravi Shankar on 20 April 2017. The main objective of this scheme is to provide early decisions on pending cases.
  • Under Nyaya Mitra Scheme, cases pending for 10 years or more than 10 years have been given place.
  • Under the Nyay Mitra Scheme, the post of Nyay Mitra has been given to a retired officer or an executive officer with legal experience.
  • Amicus curiae cases will be heard at the District Facilitation Center located in the Common Service Center
  • At present, according to the report of the Law Ministry, 2.4 crore cases are pending in the country. Of these cases, 10 percent are 10 years old.
  • This scheme has been started in 200 districts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Gujarat and 27 districts of North-Eastern states and Jammu and Kashmir, totaling 227 districts of the country.
